Recreation and Community Centre Halls can be very loud and hard to communicate in. We have products and solutions to make your space calmer and quieter.
Many spaces of this nature tend to have tile floors with a drop tile, T bar ceiling. While the ceiling tile is helpful to absorb these tiles are usually of a low grade that does not have a very high absorption co-efficient.
A loud acoustical environment is fatiguing and frustrating, especially if you can only understand four out of five words.
Acoustical Fundamentals
The popular view of acoustical treatment involves soft products that absorb sound. While we apply this concept as well we augment it with diffusion.
Diffusion doesn't just absorb sound waves but also scatters them. This redirects problem reflections and minimizes them, while at the same time leaving a natural sound in the space. This occurs at all frequencies, especially in the bass, fundamental frequency range, which is harder to control and reduce or attenuate.
There are numerous forms of diffusion available and most are more costly than absorption. CS Acoustics uses a diffusion system that incorporates multiple units in tandem with each other and the surrounding surface. As a result we are able to use a much smaller surface area foot print than absorption panels and yield a greater amount of reduction at a competitive price.
Absorption does not reduce low frequencies by a significant enough amount. If problematic fundamental frequencies are addressed correctly, mid and high harmonics are also balanced.
The acoustical nature of rooms with these characteristics, exhibit high ambient (sound) levels across the frequency spectrum. Fundamental low frequencies are powerful and excite adjacent, upper harmonic frequencies.
Certain frequencies are aggravating to human hearing. This is often a complex harmonic group of frequencies formed on top a fundamental frequency that is most distracting. By reducing or eliminating foundational frequency problems, ambient sounds become much less annoying and fatiguing.
Impact
As the overall volume or ambient sound level of a room is decreased, it is easier to hear throughout the space. In electronics, we often refer to a specification called “ signal to noise.” This is the amount of signal in relation to the noise produced by the circuit or product. This is the same concept for the acoustical environment of a room; if the noise in a space is reduced, you hear more “signal.” As a result of eliminating problem reflections and echoes, every little sound is not amplified to add to the acoustical noise of the room.
A space that does not have noticeable echoes and a balanced frequency response will be a quieter room to speak in. Speaking across the room no longer requires your voice to be raised.
Formerly unclear companions become more audible. Communication is improved. Time spent in a better acoustical environment is much more pleasurable and engaging.
